Open Source for the Enterprise

This course was commissed by SIM University as part of her masters programme in Open Source Software Management.

This course allows the student to explore an emerging software industry –
that of open source. After an introduction to open source software,
students will form groups to examine the various issues involved in either
using or developing open source software for the enterprise. These will
cover areas like the following: maturity of open source, the open source
skill set, the ROI (Return On Investment) case, open source adoption /
implementation strategy, support models for open source, open source
licenses and empowerment by open source software. The approach taken
in this course is by way of project assignments, presentations to the group
and a final roundup of the issues involved.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand what Open Source Software (OSS) is, its nature and life
    cycle

  2. Assessing the Maturity of an OSS solution
  3. Understand the skills required within an organization to successfully
    deploy and support OSS solutions

  4. Comparing TCO and ROI of OSS and Commercial Software
  5. Defining suitable strategies for adopting, applying and managing OSS
  6. Be aware of the various support models available for OSS
  7. Appreciate the common licenses used by OSS and their conditions
